Africa, Ethiopia 02.02.2010

The IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation founded a school in Ethiopia’s Desi region, eight km from the capital city Addis Ababa. The construction of 720-student capacity Fejr high-school began in 2008 and the school was opened in 2009-2010 education year. IHH representatives, Desi mayor, opinion leaders and local people took part in the opening ceremony. The school has physics and chemistry laboratories and provides teaching in scientific and social sciences as well as religious subjects.

The number of schools in Desi was inadequate. Crowdedness of existing schools kept quality of education down. There were around 100 students in each classroom. The IHH school has contributed to raising education standards of the region. The school was funded by donations of charitable people from Turkey. The donors were thanked during the opening ceremony.

700 families distributed foodstuff

Meanwhile, the IHH distributed foodstuff enough for a month to 700 impoverished families in Somali Region, one of the poorest regions in Ethiopia. About 4,000 people were given food packages of corn and cooking oil.

Vocational training for local women

The foundation opened a sewing and embroidery training center in Addis Ababa to help local women participate in social life. The classes taught by a private instructor will increase women’s participation in social life and enable them to contribute to their families’ income. Twenty students are trained in dress sewing and embroidery on cloth.
