Cataract surgeries by the side of Nile River
Cataract surgeries in Sudan which are carried out as part of the IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation’s Africa Cataract Project continue. Eye examinations have been offered to 5,000 people in a cataract
Africa, Sudan 11.04.2012

Cataract is one of the most widespread diseases in Africa. A cataract is a clouding that develops in the crystalline lens of the eye or in its envelope. It can be treated with a simple surgery; however, cataract patients, particularly those living in rural areas, cannot afford to have this operation due to financial problems.

IHH has been carrying out cataract surgeries in 22 countries in Africa. Sudan is one of the countries which fight against cataract. Since 2006, IHH has been giving support to Sudanese people who have been fighting against cataract. IHH aims to sponsor 12, 000 cataract surgeries in 2012 in cataract examination camps.

The fourth cataract examination camp in Sudan’s Blue Nile state has been established recently. A 26-member team including six doctors and 20 medical personnel offered eye examinations to 5,000 people within 10 days. The volunteer doctors who went to Sudan from Turkey performed cataract surgeries on 400 people who had cataracts while eyeglasses were delivered to 500 people suffering from other eye problems. In addition, medicine including eye drops was delivered to 3,000 people.

Turkish ambassador to Sudan Erdoğan Kök visited the camp and examined the studies there.

You can help a cataract patient regain their vision by making a donation of 80 USD.
