I was the first person she had ever seen

“I was so excited. After I removed the second bandage I noticed she was looking into my eyes. This was the first time she had ever seen anyone.”

It was so hot when we landed in Togo. I had been to several African countries before, but this time it was different; we came here to carry out cataract surgeries on 300 patients. This meant 300 people were hopefully would regain their sight. They asked me to remove the bandages from the eyes of a child. I was so excited. I bent down and tried to remove the bandages. I removed the bandages slowly, as if I was trying not to scare a tiny bird. After I removed the second bandage I noticed she was looking straight into my eyes. I was the first person she had ever seen. She was so surprised, and I was over the moon. I don’t really know how to describe this happiness. She looked at me for a while, and then she began to examine everything around her. Things I had seen a thousand times and was used to seeing were very strange to her. She studied everything around her like a scanner. I am not sure if I have ever seen such a beautiful scene before in my life. A simple cataract operation can make such a huge difference, but they neither have the means nor the money for this.”

By donating the amount you wish, you can also contribute to a person in regaining their sight. The cost of one cataract surgery is 85$.
